About:
Lithops is a genus of succulent plants in the ice plant family, Aizoaceae. Lithops are fascinating little succulents also known as living stone or flowering stone. Their shape, size and colour cause them to resemble small stones in their natural surroundings. They blend among the stones as a means of protection. The plants are virtually stem less, the thickened leaves being more or less buried in the soil with only the upper surfaces visible. A single showy flower with numerous petals grows from between the slit and produces a capsule fruit. Each pair of leaves is replaced by a new pair that also emerges from between the slit, with the older leaves slowly shrivelling away on either side. Living stones spread sideways, and one plant may have the appearance of several pairs of stones. The plants range from greys and greens to reds and purples in colour, depending on the species, and the leaf surfaces may be smooth to pebbly in appearance. The plants are extremely drought resistant and can be grown both indoors / outdoors.
Flowering Season: Flowers can be seen during spring or early summer.
Planting Media: Use soilrite mix thoroughly mixed with sand and pebbles (1-1.5cm). The soil mixture must be well drained.
Water: Lithops need much less water than other succulents. During winter, when they are splitting their leaves, they should not be watered at all. During summer water only when the leaves begin to wrinkle. When beginning to water again in spring, wait until the outer leaves have shed and new growth can be seen.
Sunlight: It prefers full sunlight but can also be kept in partially shady places.
